Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey, was wondering, I just put some 33/12.50's on and would like to set my Speedo correctly, I know where the cable comes from the transmission, I have never fooled with a speedo cable before and was wondering is it simple to do and play with until I get it right or does it just cost a couple of dollars to have a mechanic to do it,Is it worth messing with?? what should I do, thanks!!

I had a speedo recaled once, they put a little gear box between the output on the trans and the cable, put the car on a dino and installed the correct gears and it was done. $20.00 at the time was all that it cost. Ed

Do it like this:

1) Remove the piece on the transmission where the speedo cable goes into the trans. There's only one bolt holding it in.

2) Drive out the roll pin that goes through the speedo gear.

3) Install the correct speedo gear.

If memory serves, and if you have a Gen I, I think you need the drive gear with 23 teeth, and stock is 26 teeth. I'll try to look it up tonight and post again.

Meanwhile, go to "My Home" (at the top of this web page) and put what you're driving in your signature, so we know what you're working on.

Good grief, I thought it was as simple as just taking a wrench and adjusting the cable! I think I will probably have someone do it, as I dont have allot of time to spend on it right now...Thanks!!....Coop

Out of curiosity, why isn't there a link to this on the Mitsubishi tech page?

With the correct part, I did this in the parking lot of a Best Western in less than 1/2hr. That's where the install pics were taken.

On a scale of 1-10, 1 being filling up your gas tank and 10 being a full automatic transmission rebuild, this rates as a 2. Oil changes take me longer than this did.

It'll take you longer to read the article than to actually do the swap! And worse, most shops won't be willing or knowledgeable enough to do it anyway.

Also note that the chart provided in the article calculates tire revolutions per mile based on an assumption about tire sizes that is probably not correct. A 33x12.50R15 is probably NOT 33" in diameter.

For a reference, I looked up a 33x12.50 Bridgestone Dueler A/T on their website. They spec at 32.6" diameter, and 639 revs per mile (source: www.bridgestone-usa.com). I expect most brands will give you similar results, but go to your tire mfg's website and look for a spec sheet to be sure.

Using this info to calculate, I come up with a 23-tooth speedo gear (Mitsu part number MD705463) needed for 33x12.50 tires, as opposed to the 22-tooth gear recommended in the article.
