I was at the Welding shop today getting some rods that will weld to cast and the Welding guy told me that it is next to impossible on some cast metals to weld them to mild steel. I have read many articles on the net where people do it but is there a trick to it? I am having a friend of mine weld it up for me but just in case he doesn't know Do I need to preheat the cast part, or is the guy at the welding shop just blowing smoke.

Thanks for the help

Isn't 6040 a front seat? 6011 and 7014 would prolly work for you.. Just make sure they are zackly where you want them before putting the rod to em..
I do not see a lot of risk in the welds breaking at this weld so I would not try to overdo them.

Thanks for the tips. I bought the cast welding rod before I read this but I was reading the package and its designed for bonding the two different types together. I wasn't worried about it untill the guy at the shop said something and it got me thinking...thats what I get for thinking <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

Those cast iron rods are pretty neat.. I have been known to fool around with them some.. They do work! If you have something to weld to a CI surface it will stay where you put it. Or small cracks can be eliminated in lots of places.. Even in heads with these rods.
