Hey all, I have a 2001 tj sport and my check engine light recently went on and I brought it in to the dealership and they told me it was a purge selenoid? Does anyone know what this thing does? How much it costs to replace and how big of a job is it to replace? Im no mechanic, but I can do a job if I know what im doing and what to look for.... Any help on this would be much appreciated.. Thanks
Phil..

I don't know about the cost, but it is the soliniod on top of the evap canister that.... purges it of exess fuel vapor.

Jeep is considering a recall on this and should; yours is not the only one I've seen with this problem. The bright side is that it will not effect the drivability of the jeep and the only ill effects is that check engine light staying on and masking any other possibly more important codes that should pop up. I have reset my buddys computer many times to get that light out of his face while he waits to see if a recall pops up. There is a TSB that was sent out to all the dealerships on this subject; the TSB # is...
(18-009-01 MAR 01 EVAP System - Leak Detection Pump Operation) Mention this to the dealership and see what the instructions from the engineers actually were for the fix.

I tried looking and could not find a TSB that matched the case number and date you gave me? I did find this one though : Manufacturer : DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
Service Bulletin Num : 2500401 Date of Bulletin: MAY 11, 2001 NHTSA Item Number: 620071
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM
Summary: SUBJECT REGARDING ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES CAUSED BY AN EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM LEAK. *TT

SO WHAT EXACTLY does a TSB do for me anyhow? Does that mean the dealer is supposed to fix it for me? Or that they are just aware of the problem?

TSB = Aware of the problem

Recall = free fix

im bored so i gotta bring this up.
when did people start pronouncing solenoid ...."cellenoid"
i cant count the number of people that i've heard say cellenoid when they are talking about their vehicle not starting. its to the point now where its even being spelled according to the mispronunciation. there IS an "O" in the word. keep in mind, this is just a pet peeve and i'm not trying to insult anyone or start a fight.

WOW Brian, you really are bored. If you want to get that technical, The I in your "im" should be a capital and it should have an ' between "I'm", Your solo "I" should be a capital, cant should be "can't" , the I of It's should be a capital, with another ' making it "It's". The T in the beginning of There should be a capital, along with the K in Keep (beginning of a sentence).
I guess we are both bored... lol... Sorry, if my Jeep wasn't in the shop I would be out working on it.
