Did I just hose up? (Calmini Cone Air Filter) #609645 06/02/05 01:10 AM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just purchased and am in receipt of a Calmini Cone Air Filter for my 2000 Trooper LS.

I purchased it maily for the supposed increase in power that it claims to give. Sadly, I had not done a whole lot of research on the side-effects of the installation, and am now worried that I screwed up.

Is engine heat a major concern? I will be using my rig as a daily driver in Laredo, Texas (crossing into Nuevo Laredo daily), and doing some rudimentary (<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" /> steps!) off-roading in the surrounding desert. Do I really need to fabricate a baffle wall or some other arangement to feed the filter with cooler air from the outside?

BTW, I also purchased the filter because I want to use the area where the stock filter is for a secondary battery.

I've read a bunch of threads which address this to one level or another, but either they provide too little info or they talk straight over my head. Could someone please give this newbie some sage advice in simple English?

Thanks.

Cone airfilter definitely makes the engine breathe better but more air in will mean more fuel to some degree

This statement bugs me...if more air and more fuel are getting to the engine, you will be making more power and will back off the throttle to maintain the same speed, so now you have less air/fuel than before. So if you are experiencing poorer gas mileage than with the stock intake, I would first suspect less dense, warmer air form the engine compartment creating poorer fuel mileage before "more air"...splitting technical hairs perhaps, but there is my 2 cents.
