Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
I just completed our first trip towing the 99 TJ with our motorhome. I had the xfer case in neutral and the ignition was set to keep the steering wheel unlocked.
Jeep towed great but the towing racked up miles as it was being towed, I didn't think this was suppose to happen on a Wrangler. Have I missed a step or what can I do to prevent the towing miles?
Thanks for any input, Ken.

Yeah they got smart and put the output on or near the tailshaft of the transfer case. If you do not want the miles unplug it while towing. I think you would have to reconnect when driving though. Big Jim <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Disconnect either the rear driveshaft or the speedometer cable/sender.

Does the TJ have a speedometer cable or is it electronic. I was thinking if it happens to be electronic that one of those quick battery disconnects might work.

Easy way to figure that one out.... Look underneath and see if there is a beefy cable thing coming out of your transfer case... If there is some sort of wired deal, you will or should know.... Or you could pull your neg. battery cable and test it by towing.... There should be a clicking plastic boot on the back of your dash that you can easily undo and it should keep the miles from racking up....

Ok, it IS lectronic and leaving the key in the ignition to keep the steering wheel unlocked did power the electronics and added miles while towing. I installed a disconnect at the negative battery terminal so I can kill power while towing. Works Great.
