Getting the Wheeling Fever
How do you know if the ECU is dead? I've been troubleshooting my no start problem, and I can't get a code. It spikes up and stays. I hope I haven't killed the ECU trying to diagnose why the truck won't turn over.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi all. I still haven't gotten my 91' running yet. I wondered if anyone had opinions on whether it's worth sending off the original ECU for repair, or if it's better to replace new. Since I've followed the troubleshooting guide and replaced lesser expensive items, I've finally worked my way up to the big enchilada. Any advice or recommended places to buy?
Thanks!

Used at a salvage yard is a good place to start. Have a phillips screw driver in hand so you can disassemble it to check the caps for leakage. If they're ok then the unit should be ok.

Be sure you buy the right ECU for your engine. They do differ every couple of years. 89, 90-91, etc.

Supposedly the '90 and '91 units are the same, but there can be other differences between CA and Federal models. Get the number from your ECU and compare it to one in a junkyard or other suppliers:

Good Place to Shop, but This One's Overpriced

I bought an '89 unit there for $70 recently. Don't fall for the "core exchange" deal at suppliers. Instead have your old one repaired and keep it for a spare - if you keep your truck, you'll probably need it later. I'm not recommending this company - just passing along something I found on a search:

ECM To-Go

Here's a repair guide if you're handy with electronic skills:

ECU Capacitor Replacement

Here's another supplier:

ECM-ECU

Many folks have the work done by:

Av-Pro

Good luck,
Frank

You know, it never fails to amaze me the amount of knowledge that everyone has here. Thanks for all the advice.
If I get this truck up and running again I owe you all a beer. Or at least a bottle of 10W-30. (or fuel of choice) LOL!
