Acquired my first Toyota with an automatic transmission this weekend and had a question for you knowledge gifted folks that have had to run these setups. Engine is a bone stock 1985 22R-E coupled to an A340D (I think thats what the ID said) automatic transmission.

Question, when hand turning the engine...do y'all just put the transmission in neutral in order to free things for turning or is there more to it.

Time to come clean....its not a 4x4, its a Celica GT. Pretty sure the engine is seized but wanted to make sure that I wasnt trying to wrench it over with armstrong and be fighting the trans. Thanks for any replies.

I know nothing about toy autos but I would imagine it would not matter what gear it was in as the torque converter should allow you to turn the engine over in anything but park. Hell, it may even allow you to turn it in park.

Now to hijack your offtopic thread. How does the "Park" position on an auto tranny hold the vehicle? My guess is it locks something in the tranny output? Autotrannys are like black magic to me.

You can turn the engine over in park and neutral easily. Think about it; the engine is running (turning) while the tranny is in these positions.

As for how the vehicle is locked, take a look at howstuffworks.com They have all kinds of great stuff there. Here is the article on how an automatic transmission works: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm

Darin, how many 22Rs do you have in your shed now? You are addicted!

Been a self admitted addict of the 22R-E engines since I wasted my first one about 4 years ago. As far as how many do I have in the shed right now? Just 1...I swear. But its room-mate is a W56 and matching transfercase too. I only have 4 22R-Es in my possession though, with 2 of them powering the 4Runner and 4x4, the one on the stand in the shed...and this one thats coming out of the Celica tonight. Last night I disconnected everything, dug around to find the ECU (behind the glove box up high) but couldnt get the wiring to feed through the firewall....so went the long route and disconnected all the EFI connections instead. Feels great to have stained black hands again!

This motor is definately seized, couldnt hand turn it and when I tried using the starter it didnt budge. Just what I was looking for in project! Might extend this project to include doing a 5-speed W55 swap for the experience and headache it will bring!

thanks for replies fellas....and the links.

the motor should free wheel in park, park is only a catch pawl on the output shaft.

Darin: I have an extra pedal assm. stuff if you are going to convert to stick................Karl

Karl, good to see you buddy. I might have to take you up on the assembly if I do convert it to 5speed. Gotta get the engine out before I decide anything else though. Them dang cars just aint got no room to work underneath. And yes....jackstands are in place.
