Cherokee Auto Trans Models? #614359 06/13/05 06:56 PM

I am trying to track down an NP231 transfer case for a friend of mine for her daily driver. She has a '99 XJ Cherokee with an automatic in it, however neither of us know the model number. Can anyone tell me what automatic transmission this would have in it? AW4? A999? 44RE? I need this information to determine the input shaft length and spline count for the transfer case.

Thanks!

Harry

Need to know what engine is in it. if it is a 4 cyl it probly has the 21 spline and six or 8 cyls would be 23. What engine does it have? 4 cyl could be 42RE, 4.0L AW-4, 8cyl 44 RE. AW-4 has 19 bolt rectangle pan.

Oops sorry Pete. It has the 4.0L motor in it. I am thinking it is probably an AW4 but that is not what I wanted to here since I have a friend with an NP231 from behind an A999 it appears that the input shaft lenth is different.

Yes, I believe the AW-4 uses the short shaft and the 999 uses the long one. If you are swapping out cases the shafts should be interchangeable, unless the 999 is pre '95 (they use different gear cuts). The 231 is easy to dissmember and reassemble.

4.0L came with the AW4 automatic and the AX-15 5spd.
