Ok so i had to drive 50 miles the other day. I have driven this jeep since the rebuild of engine and install of rebuilt tranny almost 2000 miles with no problem. Now i was towing a light weight trailer and by light i mean 250lbs total, trailer and all. Im driving along at 70 and i have to slow down so i let off the gas and hear this terrible grinding. Its not a broken griding but more of a dry metal grind. So i checked my tranny and i see a little fluid between the bellhousing and tranny, and well lubed up undercarrage. The sound either sounds like the back of the tranny or the front of the t-case. I checked tranny fluid and its dang near full, i havent checked t-case yet but does anyone have any ideas. I dont really want to have to rebuild my t-case so soon after my last fix up...Thanks guys

I've got an idea.. Check the fluid in your t-case. Then lets think about it,

Well the fluid in the t-case was fine. It wasnt pouring out as if the seal between t-case and tranny is gone and its not leaking fluid. So it has to be the tranny cuz when it does happen if i press in on the clutch for a few seconds it goes away. So is it a bearing in the tranny or something else? thanks guys

Ok reign. First off you CANNOT tell where the sound is coming from! PERIOD! So lets think about the things that are most likely the problem! LEAVE the tranny and transfer case out of it for the time being! Jack her up and check all 4 wheels and both driveshafts REAL GOOD! Them are usually the culprets in the noise you describe. It might be the throwout bearing.. Do all of these and make sure they are all in good health..
Then go to the tranny and transfer case. Drive it in 4 a while and then if it makes the noise shift the transfer case to NEUTRAL while it is making the noise. Then the same with the tranny...neutral while the noise is happening.
It is trial and trial again to find the noise.

Body Damage is Cool
I had a similar problem with my 86 CJ, T5, D300. I couldn't tell if the noise was coming from the T-case or the tranny though it seemed to emanate from the T-case shifter. I checked u joints and found a bad one in the rear Drive shaft. after fixing it I still had the noise but not quite as bad. I figured the transmission was on borrowed time. Then I installed a CV driveshaft with proper angles and VIOLA! the noise disappeared and has not returned. Apparently the driveshaft vibrations were to blame combined with a T-5 and D300 combo that has 150k miles on them. FYI I have a SOA lift of about 5 1/2". All is good now.

Well im now seeing fluids leaking from in between the bellhousing and tranny. The last time i saw this the case was cracked on the old tranny. Lord not again...And Jim i do have slight drive line vibrations from the rear axle. Thats next on the list I have to re seat the axle in the pins so it doesnt rock. But if it was the throw out wouldnt it do it in all gears and not just in 4th and 5th. Maybe its that slight loss of power when i decelerate combined with the vibration. But then why is it leaking fluid, Engine oil and ATF is totally different so i know its not engine. I will go throw and check all my u-joints and stuff. When i did the Engine tranny rebuild/replace i did u-joints and made sure it was all tight. The rear axle poped out since the work and i just havent done it yet. Its not all that hard to do is it?

Have you checked the clutch master cylinder? If a bearing in the tranny or t-case were dry you'd get about 10 miles before it started destorying other things. Have you made sure all the bell housing bolts are tight? If the rear end is able to move around and you have driveline vibrations, definatly inspect the rear u-joints. It only takes a mile or 2 of high speed driving and bad u-joint angles to kill a joint.
