I'm in the process of changing the fuel pressure regulator and (this may sound dumb to some) should gas be squirting from the hoses as I disconnect them from the regulator? I did not relieve the fuel pressure before beginning. Whether your answer is yes or no, please tell me why so I can understand. Thank you in advance. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

There will be pressure. Next time you plan to open the fuel system, relieve the pressure by starting the engine and pulling the relay for the fuel pump. When the pressure drops the engine will conk out. If the fuel rail didn't have pressure on start you'd have to wait until the fuel pump built up enough pressure for a good injector spray to get a good fire.

I'm familiar with relieving the fuel pressure, which I didn't do. How come there was no fuel coming out of the regulator when I disconnected the fuel lines from it?

The regulator isn't like a valve that shuts off. It regulates pressure by offering resistance to the flow from the fuel rail. It will hold pressure from the fuel rail for a time, but I'd imagine once the pressure from the pump goes off it just trickles through the regulator until it's equalized on both sides of the line.
