Hey, what's up? Trooper is still "no-go". Got a question that I have to put in novice language. If you follow the throttle cable from the firewall, it crosses over the motor & attaches to the throttle lever...that much I got. Also attached to the throttle lever is another cable that moves when the thr. lever is moved. This cable goes straight down into the motor somewhere (again...novice). Attached to this cable (before it goes into the motor) is a little red cap (?). I hope you understand what I'm talkin' about. Can anyone tell me what this cable is...where it goes...what it does. I ask because when I use the throttle lever to try and rev the motor, this particular cable comes up, as I assume it should, but it does not go back down into the motor like it should. I have to manually push it back in. Also, re: my ongoing problem...I can stick a screwdriver in between the throttle stop to raise the idle & it will stay-maybe 700-800 RPMs. As soon as I try to accelerate a little more, she begins to stumble & eventually stall. Thanks all in advance.

That is the kick down cable for your automatic trans, you might have a kink in the cable and thats why it is not going back to its original position. Don

If I'm not mistaken, it's not a kick down cable.

The auto's in the '89 are electronic controlled shifting.
The cable simply tells the the trans where the throttle position is so it knows how much line pressure to apply for shifting under load. You can actually take that cable off the throttle and lock it in to place so it can't move.
You'd just have some hard shifting at low rpm or soft shifting at high rpm (depending on where you lock it). It would still downshift as TCM told it too.
