I saw this thread on the Isuzu forum: Stinkyfab Tie Rod Ends - prototype I e-mailed him about their use or adaptation for Toyotas: TRE's would have to be different because of the taper, and I'm positive the length would be different as well I'm sure a setup could be made for toys with a similar design, but they would be entirely their own parts. He wanted 10 guinea pigs, er, I meant bold, adventurous types to make a production run for Isuzus. Is there any interest here to get some of these?

Why not talk to Marlin or SKY and have them make up some short tie-rods with FJ TRE's. I am pretty sure they will work in your steer arms.

I've written a couple of places who pretty much just replied that their products wouldn't work to upgrade mine. It's been a while and I don't remember which companies I wrote to, but I gave up on using the FJ ends.

Look into 1 ton toyota steering linkages. I have not verified it, but i was told that the 1 ton stuff is bigger. I figure if mine ever fail, I would look into 1 ton stuff.
You could see what a machine shop would charge to machine down a larger end and cut new threads, shouldn't be that much.
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed

Yes, and THANK GOD they failed while turning, under 20 mph, or I would've rolled the truck. I did this not once, but twice. I had the 2nd set of tie rod ends sitting in the floorboard; about 3 days apart.
Inners failed on both of them. Pop your outer one loose sometime and see what your wheels do. It's something you DON'T want happening at highway speed. The first one took me straight off the road about 30 feet; luckily no ditch. The second one I managed to get off the road; changed that b*** right there; still had the pickle fork behind the seat.
You'll notice I had the parts for the other side; if you change one, change 'em both, cuz chances are the mate isn't far behind the first one.
That was at 320K, IIRC.

Wow! I think that has to be highly unusal. Considering the number of guys that run taller than stock tires on trucks with hundreds of thousands of miles with the stock tie rods and no problems. Worst case I've heard is bent tie rods from reefing on the steering wheel after a tire got wedged in between rocks.
Were these the tie rod ends themselves that snapped off or the rods? And were they factory or aftermarket? I wonder if the extreme cold of Alaska could have some unforseen affect on them. Of course 320K miles and if that was all in Alaska....
Man, I'm sure glad you didn't get hurt!

I bent 2 tierods and about 3 idle arms when I was running ball joint spacers on my 93 4 runner. It all depends how the terrain is and how slow you go over it. Add alot of addtional weight to your truck rock sliders, bumpers, TRE's bend easily. I don't have that problem anymore though I have a SAS truck <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I've always wondered about the angle of the TREs with my lift. Now, I've added the ball joint spacers and was just thinking of upgrading, if possible. I've read that many people have trail spares. Instead of buying a spare, I would rather upgrade them and keep the stocks ones as a trail spare.
