Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 1989 Raider with a 2.6/auto, with LSD in the rear. Instead of repairing the engine, I've found a 1986 SWB Montero, with a 2.6/5 spd, open gears. Can the LSD chunk from the '89 be installed into the '86, or is there any difference in axles, gear ratio, etc.? The '86 will cost about the same as the necessary repairs on the '89, but it has new 33's, a roll bar, and a gold tone paint job that I prefer over the red on the raider. I can keep the raider for parts.

Since they are both 2.6's the diffs should swap just fine.

The Raider (89) has a warning sticker in the driver side door pillar, along with a modification label. I did not see those on the '86 Monty. Although I've jacked two Raiders with labels (which have LSD), and a few of both Raiders and Monties without (labels or LSD); they were all in the '87-'90 range. I'ts worth the three minutes to check a non-labeled truck anyway, 'cause you never know. Limited Slip Sticker

The entire axle can swap over without any problem. Save the hassle of removing the LSD assy. Check once again the 86 with one rear wheel up. There should be resistence in turning the free wheel. otherwise, you really got an open!

The '86 is definitely open. The man is asking $1500 for it, after changing the engine. The engine smokes, so I can see why the customer did not want to pay the bill for it.

You don't need to swap the entire axle, just the 3rd member.
