I was hoping I could get some opinions on purchasing a rebuilt long block to replace my current engine. I am still looking into rebuilding it myself, I am going to run to the machine shop a little latter today to see if they could give me an opinion on the engine and maybe an estimate of the work. I have been looking into a re-manufactured engine a little more now. There is a service out there called powerpro that offers a reman long block for 1939 dollars. The core charge is dirt cheap in case I want to keep my block. Here was the list of parts they replaced on the engine: pistons and rings, new lifters, new valve springs, all new bearings, all new seals, new timing parts, new oil pump, new rocker arms. The engines are bored since the engine gets new pistons. They start the engines to test oil pressure and compression. The warranty is 5 years and 100,000 thousand miles. Parts are 100% covered by the warranty and they cover labor on repairs at 65 dollars an hour. Free-shipping and no tax. It almost seems like a better idea than rebuilding it again considering how my last engine turned out. http://www.powerpro2000.com/long_block_engines.htm

That's a good price considering the warranty. Here's an alternative, but I don't know the quality - add $500 or so for machine shop work on your block/crank/heads and choose your poison.
Individual buys can be made for pistons, rings, bearings, etc., but will likely total more than the price of the kit in the end.

Considering my lack of a proper garage I think that their work would probably end up cleaner as well.

Doug,
I know when I had my mechanic swap in a used japanese engine, they went through several before they found one that was a good engine (leak down test, etc.) which took several weeks.
The fact that this company picks up the shipping tab means that they eat alot of the cost if they screw up the engine so it sounds like a better alternative to the japanese used engines.

Yeah I wouldnt be looking into a used engine.
If I get the engine installed and broken in, and I dont like the compression numbers or the oil pressure I will using that warranty. Plus I plan on charging it on my Amex, so I have added protection if I need it.
The 65 dollars for labor might be the selling point for me. If I run into a problem at school I wont have time to fix it myself and I am going to have to take it to a shop even though I wouldnt want to.

There is a 2.6 at a local 4x4 shop that I've looked into. It is completely rebuilt, with machine work done at very reputable local shops. The assembly was done in house. They've had it for about 3 years, so the price has come down from $1900 to $1000. It's a P-IIII block, has intake and exhaust manifolds, carb, alternator bracket, basically a complete drop-in. the only hang-up is the 2WD oil pan. But at that price, for a complete engine, the cost of a gasket to swap your pan over is no biggie. P.S.- This is not the shop selling the '86 Monty.

Also, here is a place to order everything you need for a do-it-yourself job. H&M not bad for $370. You can also buy a new crankshaft for $125 to ensure perfect bearing clearances. (there is a $35 core charge)

The genII is a 3.0 V6 engine, but thanks for the link. Also if it is a new crank shaft why would they want a core. Most likely a cut crank.
