I'm a very happy owner of a 91 Trooper LS, with 2.8 V6, 5spd. I purchased her last year, with a shop quote of "beyond repair" engine damage as told to me by the prior owner. It had 150K on it, and on start up, blew oil in a massive stream out the left side of the motor. Being mechanically adept, having fixed everything from tote-goats, done engine rebuilds in snowstorms (grew up in Montana) and flight mechanic on military airplanes, I figured I could fix this too. But, never having seen a trooper up close and personal before, let alone the highly asteemed GM 60 degree v6, I had no idea what the problem could be.

So, I bought this critter for a very decent price, and once it was home and in the garage, I got to poking around under the engine. Found the oil filter seal had blown. I replaced it with a $4 Fram filter, and it worked great... for 2 weeks. Then, this new filter blew a seal as well. Fortunately I was less than a block from the house and hurried back into the garage. I now need to use the $10 Fram filter, (XG model), but have put 30K + miles on this thing, and absolutely love it. My oil pressure however is high, above 55 but below 110 (there are no markings in between these two numbers). My guess is a plugged PCV.

Anyway, to make a long story just a little bit longer... My new-to-me Trooper that I dearly love, is starting to show a that a little bit of it's git-up-and-go-has-got-up-and-left. And even though it still does run great, and feels fairly strong yet, I read the threads on how to get more umph from a tired 2.8L, but am now having thoughts remininscent of Tim the Tool Man Taylor ("More Power").

I found a '93 GM V6 Vortec engine for a fair price. Don't know yet what it came out of or the displacement. But am curious, from what I could find, this may, or may not be, a 60 degree motor. And it could possibly be a 4.3L. It does have TBI though.

Will this bolt right up to current 5spd? IF so GREAT!
If not, what mods would be required to get it inside my Trooper?
Or, what other motors will bolt right up, without doing any major mods?

I will post the eng. size, and vehicle of origin, as soon as I get a reply from the seller.

Run a search. There is a post somehwere listing all the motors that will fit our Trucks (some harder than others mind you, and I would search and find it for you but I am in a hurry).

I am pretty sure that the 4.3 will bolt right up as long as you have the 2.8 now. However, not sure how hard it would be. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

The Vortec engines are 4.3s. They will NOT bolt up to the Isuzu transmission.

The 4.3 is a 90 degree engine. Some of them did come with the TBI.

The simplest alternative is to put in a 3.4, which is a 60 degree engine.

This is what I suspected. I will now start searching for a 3.4 instead.

on a side note - I love 4x4wire. After having my trooper for a bit over a year, I find it to be nearly bullet proof. Now in the process (with much help from the forums here) in turning her into a Crawler.

simple = chevy camaro 93-94 3.4L. longblock swap, move over all your accessories intake and exhaust and use the same wiring.

more complex is a 3.8, you need to either graft its computer in your car or run some type of custom built fuel management system. The 3.8 is popular because it has the 60 degree bolt pattern, extremely reliable and cheap and was installed in over 14 different GM cars. Like 14 different models!

v8s and other types of engines would require a full drivetrian swap

Go with the easy swap , and add a few things to get as much out it as you can.Myself I am doing the 3.4 swap , with a Holley TB , bored intake , headers , and a few other little goodies in there too.I think with everything I will end up doing I should get close to 200 HP , which is a lot more respectable than the stock 120 from the 2.8.

The stock 3.4 has 160 , which is a nice upgrade by itself for a practicaly bolt in swap.I'm going all out though , new starter , distributor , almost new 3.4 , almost new tranny and transfer case.Have to replace the tired old stuff with over 350,000 on it don't ya know <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

At one time Advance adapters offered a kit if you had a manual tranmission that would bolt to the 4.3 , then have to make a few other mods to make it work , but they no longer offer that product , unless you could find a used one somewhere that someone is selling.To my knowlege , it never worked with an auto tranny.

Interesting, that adapter was to the 4 cylinder bellhousing.
