99 3.2 liter engine will not stay running or start without throttle pressed? #628239 07/20/05 01:51 AM

I have a 99 3.2 liter Amigo that has developed a problem that has me stumped. It will not start without depressing the gas pedal. It turns over easy and sounds like it is trying to start but will not run unless the gas pedal is depressed slightly and will not idle without continuing to press on the gas pedal. As soon as I let up on the throttle, it dies. Anyone seen this before? It is an intermittent problem, as it happened a couple weeks ago, it went away after changing the fuel filter. The problem came back and I changed the fuel regulator, the problem went away again. But now it is back, again. Any ideas?

Have you checked your fuel pressure? It may be a fuel pump problem.

Sounds like it might be the idle air control valve/solinoid sticking and not allowing the air to bypass the throttle blade at idle. When you crack the throttle open slightly, you are allowing the engine to breathe again.

"Common Fixes" suggested using Bosch Platinum4 plugs. However, they should not be used on newer isuzu's that have ion sensing through the plug. They are not compatible and cause the computer to register multiple misfires. Just a heads up before anyone spends the money.

Thanks for all the help, it was indeed the idle air control valve. Replaced it, $40, now it starts and runs great again.
