OK, I started on the timing chain replacement on my 89 runner with 22re and when I removed the valve cover I noticed sludge in the rear driverside of the head so I have decided to do a valve job. I have removed all the bolts holding the intake to the head but the intake won't budge. I noticed that there is one bolt on the lower part of the thermostat housing and it does not have a "regular" bolt head, does it have to be removed also?? I took a pic to simplify matters

Okay...if you are pulling the intake off of the head before removal...then yes. But I would advise pulling the intake with the head, then remove it on the bench..save you a pile of time and bandaids. Also did you make sure and pull the 12mm bolt that is hidden in the pool of oil under the distributor drive gear? Dont forget that your PAIR system piping and heater return are also bolted to the back of the head. Just go about things real careful like so you dont break a hard pipe, tweak the head or booger up any wiring. ~Darin

Yup that is one of the two "hidden" head/intake bolts. Take Darin's advice and pull the head/intake as a combo, it makes life easier, trust me on this one Darin has been pulling a lot of heads/intakes/engines lately :-P

Thanks, guys. Sure is more complicated than my 87 Raider. Now, does anyone have a schematic for all the vacuum hoses??? I might have screwed up when I cleaned the throttle body, accidently knocked off the stickers I had placed.
