How much clearance #629938 07/25/05 04:52 PM

Hey guys. I am just wondering how much stock clearance I should have between the ground and the bottom of my front suspension (where the stock skid plate bolts onto)? When I look underneath my runner, it just dosn't look like I have very much clearance from the bottom of my skidplate to the ground. Anybody know what it should be at stock? And what is the best way (other than bigger tires) to gain an inch or two? Thanks fellas, I am gonna go measuer now just so I can know what it is at now.

Of the two 2nd Generations that I have measured, they both sat right at 11", which is quite a bit of room. I'm sure most stockers are right around that.

You can adjust your torsion torsion bars to lift it, but I'll leave it for others to give you better feedback.

Thanks for the reply. I measured mine and I got only 9"(from the lowest part of my front suspension). Any ideas of what might be causing me to loose those other 2"? I assume you had stock tires as well?

ok, you wouldn't happen to know this spec about 1st gen as well would you?? Random, but worth a shot smile I'm really curious what the min/normal/max heights are

Can anyone chime in here and tell me what my options are for returning to stock clearance?

Jeff, try the "Early Toyota Trucks" forum linked at the top of the page or post this on YotaTech.

I have only received one measurement from a 1st Gen owner, which follows. With just the one, I have no idea if this will be close to the norm or not. This is from an '89:

Tires: 235/75R15 (worn); V6 Auto

Front bumper: 18.25"
Front diff: 9.75"
Rocker panel: 18"
Tranny cross member: 9.75"
Gas tank: 10.75"
Rear diff: 8.5"
Rear bumper: 17.25"

Your torsion bars are probably begining to sag a bit and could benefit from cranking up the bars or replacing them if you do need to replace them I would go w/ SwayAway Tbars Ive heard nothning but good.

Alright, thanks for the help. I'll try cranking on them a bit, I am sure that will help. By the way I have a set of OME rear coils on order, which will (I am told) raise the back higher than the front. My question is how much should I crank my torsion bars to level out the front? Is there a general rule of thumb to follow when doing this? and what is the max lift I want to get out of just cranking them and where should I measure from? Thanks again.

I believe OME coils give 2" of lift but im not entirely sure(anyone who knows pls chime in) as far as how much can you crank them the rule of thumb is 1.5" MAX otherwise your gonna lose wheel travel and ride comfort. If you wish to avoid cranking em for lift get the 1.5" ball joint spacers www.sdori.com Ive got a set and theyre great
