I bought this 1980 truck off a guy a few months ago. According to the info on the VIN plate, it's supposed to be black. To me, I think this guy swapped the cabs, and tampered with the VIN plates. The code on the plate for this truck says 541.

I need to get some paint to patch up a few spots, so is 541 the color code for this blue, or is it something else? I'm pretty sure this blue is a stock color.

i think until '80 or '81 our trucks didn't have a true vin...it's just the model code stamped on the frame. later on, trucks had a real VIN(starting with JT i think) as well as the model number.

i think most of the blue trucks were a little darker...

Just for the heck of it, crawl under the pax side, just aft of the wheel well to see if a JT vin is stamped in it. If present, then the cab was also set on a post-80/82 frame as well. Oh yeah, are the rivets nice and shiny on the data plate?

I wonder if there's any bashed up black Yota cabs in the local junkyards? Hmmmm..... do you guys have Yota chop shops down there?

Yes, there might very well be chop shops down here, and yes the rivets are new. The guy I purchased the vehicle from is, however, a good and honest kid, so I think at most someone swapped cabs and didn't want to go through the hassle of re-registering the thing, and instead put their own data plates back on this cab.

Thanks for the info.

Paint looks good considering the age. A bit of cut and polish with the buffer it should shine up real nice. Good find. Looks like Nordic blue 857, hard to tell with the oxidization though.
