Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'm going to check out an 86 Toyota 4x4 this weekend. The guy said his kid started the solid axle conversion and has the axle mounted, but needs a few things done, like brake lines and shocks, before it's driveable. What should I look for, as far as problem areas, so I don't get ripped off?

Bring a camera with you and take some pics. Post them here for us to critique. Most important is the weld job on the hanger and shackle mounts. You dont want to drive something around that hasnt been properly welded.

Body Damage is Cool
In addition to the SAS job, look for frame rust. The mid 80's trucks are notorious for the frames rusting from the inside out, so by the time you see it, it can be really bad.
Go over the frame with a hammer, especially anywhere the frame transitions from the horizontal (both sides of each side), and where the fuel tank sits against the frame.

Also try to find out when/if the timing chain has been replaced (if it wasn't, bargain down the price).

Well, against mt better judgement, I picked the truck up. The conversion is not done, and there is some work to be done to make this thing trail ready. The engine seems to be ok and the body is in really good shape. The wife already hates the truck, she thinks it's a pile. It's a hundred times better than the old Dodge I drug home a few years ago.
