I installed a home made open air filter about a yr ago.
Last week, went to get smog check, I failed. Besides the non stock intake which I put it back, the timing was way off....31deg
After I put the stock intake back, I adjust the timing to 10 deg. It started and ran at idle and rev fine. I felt like I lost a lot of power as I was driving away.
I came back, adjust the timing back to 31 deg. unplug the EFI 15 amp fuse and the 30A and 40A fuse. Restart the truck again, the timing still at 31 deg.
What should I do? set the timing back to 10deg? live with the bad performance till I pass smog?

keep in mind that I've never fool around with the timing at all.

thanks.

I assume the V6 timing is set like the 22RE, with the timinig/diag. jumper installed. If so, did you have the jumper installed when checking? I had to show my smog tech. about the jumper, even had to tell him the proper timing.

Yeah, he even mentioned to me about the jumper.I'd look at the timing with the jumper.

Besides the timing jumper, you also need to make sure the TPS idle setting is correct:

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml#TPSAdjustment

If that is off, the timing jumper will not cause the ECU to go into timing setting mode. They way you can tell if if there is no change in idle/timing when you put the jumper in (compared to when the jumper is out).

You're right, when I connect the jumper, there's no change in the idle speed or timing. I still have to check the TPS.
Thanks Roger.
