I have a hella FF1000 driving light kit and am working on installing it on my 4runner. I installed it but didn't have a place to mount my lights yet, so I connected everything except the lights' ground wire and the wire that goes to the high beam circut. I was anxious so I temporarily connected the wires to some places I put the high beam wire on the battery terminal, which activated the switch and the lights came on <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> However now Ive mounted the lights and I did the same thing and it wont work <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />. please help

Check the power and ground connections. Where do you have the "high beam" wire connected? If it is to the actual "high beam" circuit, are you aware that Toyota uses a switched-ground circuit on the headlights? That is, the high beam light comes on when it is grounded by the headlight switch:

Some Japanese vehicles switch GROUND instead of power to the lamps. If you have one of these vehicles, swap the power and ground from the harness to the battery. That is, the red wire goes to the ground terminal and the black wire goes to the positive terminal. Everything else remains the same except -- do not try to run a separate ground to the lamps and insure none exists through the shell of the lamp û you must use the ground supplied by the harness. You should also FUSE the Ground with the same size fuse as is in the +12V circuit or as is on the relay. Also, you must use the switch supplied with the harness û ONLY.

However this was very confusing to me and im not sure where to put the wire (is this the only wire that needs to be changed??) however Im sure that the lights worked before and I just attached teh wire to the positive battery lead liek I did this time.

Or like I did, just tied the relay power into a light switched power source (I used the parking light wire because it was easy to get to) and ran that to the relay and switch. This way I can have my (fog) lights on any time any lights are on and they turn off when I turn off the headlights/parking lights.

This harness converts your headlights to switched-power and then you don't have to mess with the switched ground conversion.

Could you have blown a fuse, or the realy when you wired them up temporarily?

I would wire the lights up temporarily using a switch, to make sure everything is working correctly, then wire them up through the high beams if you want to operate them that way. I have my driving lights wired to a seperate switch, I kick them on with the headlights and leave them on regardless if I am using high or low beams.

If you were wanting to wire them in with the high beams to avoid a ticket, it isn't necessary, the chances you being ticketed for having them this way is slim to none. Or, if you didn't want to cut a hole in the dash for the switch, just wire the relay to the parking lamps, like 4Crawler did.

Yea I chcked the fuse and it looked fine I thought that the fuse would blow to protect to relay, but I think you might be right when I tested them the getto connction I had going back to the battery (The one that is supposed to be on the high beam curcit) came off stupidly I put it back on without disconnecting the negative battery wire <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> and the relay made I aweful clicking. I thought that they were designed to so that, but do you think that would break it???
How do you know its broken?

Also what do I need to do differently since toyota's are swichted on the negative or whatever??

I think I just figured out the switched ground thing. If Im right teh only difference is if Im making it so that the lights only work with my high beams you tie on to the negative wire not the positive??? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Probably correct, the high beams will be on when the high beam wire goes to ground. The common headlight wire will have 12V at all times any lights are on.

how can I tell if the relay is good or not?

Check continuity on the coil (85-86) or apply power and feel/hear the relay click. If either of the above two tests are OK, then check that the contacts make contact (30-87) with power applied.
