Getting the Wheeling Fever
on one of my earlier posts I talked about having relaxed the spring in my air flow meter by two notches on the gear, and somebody replied that it was not adviseable and that it would/could cause damage. Has anybody else heard this? What problems could it cause? I've heard of this adjustment from a few different people and websites, most saying the downfall is that you sacrifice low end torque for a little better performance, didn't hear anything about damage to the 22re. Hell, one of the websites recommended starting by turning 3 notches just to make the difference noticeable. Mine is alright on two. A buddy that I talked to thought,if anything, it might take 5,000 mi off the life of the motor. but not likely. Has anybody heard? Is it affecting the lifespan of my 22re, or cause damage of any kind?

Here's some reading material:

A guy asked me to take a look at his 4Runner that ran badly. As I always do, I asked him what the last thing he worked on was. He said "AFM mod". This is what his #3 piston looked like. What was left of the rings were literally welded to the piston.

Darrin and a few others here have had similar experiences and some swear they've had no problems.

Roll the dice.

I swear that looks exactly like the #4 piston that came from the Gen1 22R-EB! And hey...that desk its resting on sure looks alot like the one that is in front of me right now.

Toy Story is right, some people havent had any damage result from tweaking the AFM. Mine fragged about 3 weeks after tampering with the seal and getting my stinky fingers inside of it.

Funny thing is...I think the difference between rebuilding and no damage is the ECU's ability to figure out whats going on since your O2 sensor will tell on you eventually...and the ECU will correct for adjustment.

To add to Darin, if you INSIST that you MUST fool with the MAF, TAKE NOTES, so if you have it go fubar, you can dial it back to where you started. Keep the note in the glovebox.

I've been running with mine set that way for about 7 months now but after reading those pages I'm setting it back to stock. Curious though, any damage like those rings burning out or anything else would have been visible after 7 months right? I haven't seen anything in the oil.

I kind of wonder how that would affect a burn on an engine that was already seated vs. a fresh one. This is one for Todd or EB, methinks. I know that rings headed south don't always give you fair warning, but that's about it on this; most of my stuff is carb'd. (working to change this)
