I am trying to remove a 4 cyl, 22re intake from the cyl. head and it doesn't want to budge. I am afraid of breaking the manifold, any ideas, thoughts, or mystery bolts I may be missing... Thanx

to the right of the fuel rail mounting bolt (right side bolt) is the hex-head intake mounting bolt that passes under the thermostat housing. Wont come off without removing it. Well...it will but you wont be reusing that intake.
Is the head off the block or are you leaning over the fender? If still in the truck, you also need to disconnect the heater return pipe from the bottom of the intake manifold. Easiest way to remove the intake from the head is to pull the head out and get it on the workbench so that you dont break anything.

Yep, it was the hex nut... it has been about 4 years since I rebuilt a 22re engine, but you would think I would have remembered that one, especially since it kicked my butt 4 years ago... thanks again for your help.

I had this same problem, broke my knock sensor off from prying before realizing that little bolt. try a 6mm allen head socket with extension. then you can put a breaker on if needed. be careful though it's a small diameter bolt.

Another option is to remove the fuel rail for easier access, get a grip on the bolt head with vice grips and levering them with a cheater bar. Can also use a flat tip screwdriver bit that fits snug into 2 opposite points of the hex. 3rd option is to cut two sides of the head for a nice flat gripping surface and attacking it with anything that will grab hold. Option 4....cut the head off and deal with replacement when the time comes.

Try an allen socket, you can use extensions and longer handled ratchets on it that way. Also, try tapping the head of the bolt with a hammer to help break it free. PEnetrating oil may not help much, the treaded end of that bolt is way into the head, like 3-4" away from the head. If you do get it out, be sure to apply anti-size on the threads before reassembling.
