whats up all? Ive got a question that should test all of the toyota experts. Ive got an 86 Hilux surf with a 3YE (2.0) motor. I want to know of any performance products available for this motor it is a good little motor for what it was designed for daily driving on 28" tires but it dosent do well w/ 32" tires. Any help is appreciated PS I know someone will mention axel gears but the wife has shot that down but she didnt shoot down engine mods.

I think you'll find gears are your most cost effective upgrade. Swapping from say a 4.10 to a 4.88 gear will give you an honest 19% increase in torque at the rear wheels and that is at all RPMs from idle up to redline. You would be hard pressed to find any bolt on engine mod that can make that claim.
Not familiar with that engine, not sure what all it was used in or what markets it was used in. If it was used in cars, might be worth checking out some of those forums.

Another vote for gears. Anything short of swapping in a supra I-6, wont get you the performance that the gears will. You should be able to find 3rd members with 4.56's or 4.88's far cheaper than most bolt on performance pieces, even if you have to have them shipped in from the U.S.
Do the '86's over there have a straight axle up front or the IFS like the ones stateside?
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed

We unlucky enough to cop the 3Y and 4Y engines in our Hilux from about 84 up to at least 91.... I had a 84 X-tra cab Hilux, 3Y (2.0Lt) with 31" BFG's, and it was a slug......used to turn the AC off to get up hills....Dunno about 3YE 4Y was used later (88-91) in 4-runners and Hilux..The injected series got some good reports when engine mods were carried out...
We missed out on the 22R in the mid eighties....now I'm trying to relive it! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Straight axle with IFS being an option in some markets on the highest end models. Most, if not all of the Hiluxes in the Japanese market that I've seen were SA. 4Runners/Surfs seem to have all been IFS since '86 worldwide. I would definatley do the gear thing, except... Thing is, you probably already have low gears. I've heard that factory 4.88s were common on gas engine trucks. At least in Australia. I wouldn't be surprised if your truck already had 4.88s in it. If you don't have 4.88s in it, then it shouldn't be all that expensive or hard to find a set of used 4.88 diffs in a local wrecking yard and just bolt them in. If you don't have 4.88s, you probably have 4.30s. I would be extremely surprised if you had the 4.10s that are so common over here. Generally speaking, the gas engine trucks got the lower gears while the diesel trucks got the higher gears, but high gears on the foreign trucks were 4.30s, not so much 4.10s. Best of luck. I know all about turnin off the ac acutally I just took the ac belt off it seem to free up a few more ponies. Ive already got 4.88's in it so if gears is the route I take I'll probably end up w/ 5.38's. thanks for the replies my buddy is gonna grind up a cam and port and polish the head for me...god i hope it helps.

You mean 5.29s? I figured you had 4.88s. Are those factory gears?
What about a motor swap? Or is that pretty much prohibitive over there due to regulation?
