Getting the Wheeling Fever
I finally got my over-the-cap rack finished up. Now I gotta show off.

I designed it so I could haul stuff up there, but also get up there. Using the built in ladder (bumper or side step to the plate to the cross piece to the deck), I can get up top and spread a sleeping bag or set lawn chairs or watch the parade or little league game. The deck is a 4x8' sheet of expanded metal with an 1.5" angle iron lip. The legs are 1/8" thick 1" square tube. The plates are bolted to the bed. My neighbor welded it for me (what a guy ). My biggest mistake was painting it with canned spray paint. It took 16 cans! Next time I'm using a roller.

I had 4 adults in chairs up there watching the fireworks over the 4th. Solid as a rock.

Whew. Nice to have it done. Here's the pics.

Fixed the image links. Turns out this forum doesn't like pics hosted by tinypic.com. I moved them to putfile.com and all is well. Sorry for the trouble.

Nope, I would try to fix it for you, but I don't moderate this section.

EDIT: I just tried using the image tool; looks broken..hmmm..try a right click>properties, then copy the image information (to include the .jpg/.gif, whatever) suffix, and drop that into your image tool window.

Hey Scott, looks great! I really like how that turned out. I like the idea of using it as an observation platform. Did you fab it yourself?

Oh yeah, lets see if this works...

Yep. I designed it, scavanged materials, cut it, etc. Did everything but the welding.
