Getting ready to do the 4.3 conversion. As I was looking under the hood of my 3.0 1989 LWB I wondered if I could use the existing cruise control?

I bet you could. First you are going to need to find out how the mitsu system sees the speed......

I bet you would have to use the Gm system.

If the Mitsu system is using a speed sensor, then you should be able to use it, unless it uses the old ECM for any part of it's function.

If it's only input is fron the speed sensor in the speedo, then it won't care what engine is in there, as long as it can pull on the throttle.

No problem: Use the existing setup. your vehicle uses a separate control module and imputs its speed from the reed switch in the rear of the speedometer. So even if you use the GM sensor for engine management, it will not affect the cruise control. Your only problem will be mounting and adjusting the actuator so that it will work on the GM linkage.
Good luck

How you going to use the vss on a montero transmission with a 4.3 in your truck?

The VSS on the Montero is a reed switch behind the speedometer.

well thats just nice!! When my SYE comes in I will be able to use my stock speedo.

Just so you know conner.... NP231CHD has no speedo drive.. it has a VSS and that is all... until you put an SYE kit in it. BobShaw had to use a DRAC to control his aftermarket speedo... SO this is an issue..

Perhaps, if you take the time to read my post, you would not be so quick to criticize. The question was, can he use his original cruise control? As his vehicle has a separate cruise module, he can use the VSS in the speedo for that. For engine management, he would use the VSS from the NP231. The DRAC is also used to compensate for gear ratios and tire size to a certain point and must be used. I never said to use the montero speedometer for engine management. Is it clear now?

Now i have to appoligize for not reading the post. I was talking about the NP205 not the NP 231. The 231 doesnot have a speedo drive. You are correct.

The VSS in the transfer case is in the same spot that the speedo drive would be(or where is IS when you put in an SYE).

As far as I know you cant drive a cable with a speed sensor taking up the same space? Plus.. for a cable drive the shaft has a gear on it, and with a VSS, it has a "tone ring" or reluctor.... SO.. you either have no speedo cable drive, and a VSS, OR you put in an SYE, use a cable drive, and have no VSS for the 4.3. I guess you could get creative, and fab up some dual output with a reluctor ring, and a VSS external from the output shaft. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

It is perfectly clear... just not as easy as you think.
I think the best option would be to use the GM system, and controls.
