Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello all,

Currently pulling nails with a 83 Pajero, a day or so ago the warning lights on the dash started to glow (Battery etc), also the glow plug light kept coming on and going out again.

Looked by the way that the other lights we behaving as though it was the alternator bushes on their way (Did this about 3 months ago and got a second hand one - problem resolved till now!)

Stripped the alternator down (What a dogs meal that was - who puts bushes on the inside?!) there was still about half an inch on the bushes but the alternator was full of whatever the wife pulled out the pond on the last off road experience! (Grass and mud!)

Right, got another second had one, problem lies with the fact that when I fit it and bolt on the main power I get very little in the way of lights on the dash - in fact I only get the hand brake and door open warning lights - none of the other usual lights. (Un bolt the main output from it and the lights on the dash work normally.)

I also only get 12 volts across the Battery while it's runnig rather than the 14 odd volts that I would expect.

Have I just got another dodgy alternator or does someone know of another fault that fits?

(Please don't tell me that this is a Pajero weak point - these are pigs to change!)

All - thanks in advance.

Sounds like another bad alternator. Remove the alternator and take it to an auto electric shop along with the first one (if you still have it). Maybe one good one can be made from the parts of both - or - they can bench test it and replace the needed parts with new ones.

Turns out that if we get no lights on the dash other than the door and handbrake then the rectifyer has toasted itself!

So in the 3rd installation later it's all going - yay!

But what a pain in the backside job that is!

Show me the muddy. . . .
