Getting the Wheeling Fever
95 4runner 3vze w/ a manual tranny.

I had to have my 4runner towed back to Wilmington today. I was up visiting my gradparents and to make a long story short... something bad happened in my transfer case. I will be working on the truck in my granddads yard, so I am looking for shortcuts, can I seperated the transfer case from the tranny with it in the truck, or does the transmission need to come out also?

Thanks!

Anthony

Should come one w/o any problems. I've pulled a few 4-cyl t-cases off of the back of the 5-speed. Have not worked on a V6 case, but they do look very similar. A lot easier to get back up that the tranny, too. No pilot bearing and clutch disc to get lined up with.

You will need to support the tranny while pulling the t-case. Some wood or a tall jack stand under the tranny will work, or one trick that I used was to flip the t-case crossmember end for end and bolt it back up using the forwar pair of bolts and using that to catch the end of the tranny.

Yes you can pull it with the tranny in place, that is how I did mine when I put the gear drive case in.

If you want one and are willing to come and pick it up, I will give you one for no charge. It was working fine when I pulled it seven years ago and it has been kept in the garage all that time.

I drove the truck home 180 miles last night. I took me about 8 hours including two trips to town, but it is done. The new case is nice and quiet. It was $58 on ebay and then $58 to ship. I think I got a deal!

The case came off w/ the tranny in place w/out any problem. I was planning on dropping the tranny and doing the clutch, but after reading the FSM, it was starting to look like more than I wanted to do in the grass.

Thanks agin for the info!

Anthony
