Getting the Wheeling Fever
My 94 Rodeo v6 4wd auto is having problems with the hubs. It will lock into 4wd but the hubs click and then when I try to take out the passenger side stuck in the lock position. I had to pop the cover off to unstick it. I think I may have put them back together wrong when I did the brakes last. Is there an illustration somewhere showing how they go back together? Please don't tell me to replace them, because I know they are not bad. I usually only use 4wd in winter on slippery roads.

For starters, you have manual hubs, not auto hubs. If you have to turn a dial, they are no longer considered to be automatic in their function.

There are great illustrations in any of the repair manuals, and detailed reassembly instructions in the factory Helm manual. It is probably much advised you find a picture as describing it via text over the internet is rather, um, difficult.

Please don't tell me to replace them, because I know they are not bad.

Well, they may not be bad, but they are definatly not working. Luckily, the parts in the hub are harder than the end of the axle shaft. Worst case, you tore up the end of the CV axle and it will have to be replaced.

I would start by making sure there are c-clips on the end of both axles and that the axles have not pulled out of the hub far enough to prevent proper engagement with the hubs.

Good Luck,
Michael

These are the original auto locking hubs. Nothing is torn up, c-clips are in place.

I'm confused:

I try to take out the passenger side stuck in the lock position.

Dial or no dial?

If no dial, just replace them. They are not worth the time to figure out and they will probably give you more trouble down the road when they start to gunk up again.

I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but for ~$100 or less and 20 minuets of your time, you can be good to go for the rest of the life of your vehicle.

When I shift the x-fer case out of 4wd then back up to disengage the hubs, the passenger side sticks sometimes.

Nevermind, I'll figure it out myself.

Well...good luck. Glad we could be of help.

That clicking noise is almost assuredly your Auto-Hubs going bad. I had the same thing happen on both of my troopers. Summit Racing sells a new set of superwinch hubs for $88.......I think that's your solution.

1989 Trooper 2.8 V6 5-Speed(the daily driver)- Superwinch Hubs, otherwise Stock - $350
1990 Trooper LS 2.8 V6 Auto - Superwinch Hubs, otherwise stock....for now - $182.50
1983 Chevy Blazer - Stock - $150
No Car Payments - PRICELESS

From what I remember about the autohubs, there just isn't a lot of maintenance/rebuilding that you can do. Once they start to go, they are pretty much beyond saving, or the cost to 'fix' them is too steep to consider it.

I know you hate to hear it, but I think MLClark's advice was the best. Find another pair (either used auto hubs or the superwinches, or the factory manual hubs) and swap them in. It will save you a lot of aggravation in the long run. Just know that if you get a used pair of autohubs, you run the risk of having them go bad on you long before the manual hubs will wear out.

(I know, I spent a whole lot of time and some mechanic $$'s trying to salvage the autohubs on my 1988 trooper. In the end, I had to break down and buy a set of manual hubs...)

Ok, after some fiddling around and study of the auto hubs, they must have gone bad somehow. Although, I can see no outward sign of damage. So, I tell my wife we can have new manual hubs for 85 bucks. She's not freaking out since we don't use the 4wd in the summer anyway. Then I get to thinking......I say, "You know that manual hubs means you have to get out of the truck to put it in 4wd, right?"
"WHAAAAT?!?!?, CAN'T YOU FIX THE ONE'S WE HAVE?!?!"

So, can I get new auto-locking hubs? Someone must make after market auto-hubs. Will they be more expensive than their weight in gold?
