Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well guys i need some input.
I have a 2000 Tacoma with 6" of lift runing 33's and I need to re-gear it, but I am not sure what to go with. I was thinking about 4.88's (here is my problem, because my truck has 6" of lift its possable that my next set of tires will be 35" so i wanted to have a gear that could run either tire size well)
Also what it your guys opion on runing a ARB air locker in the rear and staying with a open in the front until i can afford to put an ARB air locker in the front.
Thanks for the Help,
EDS

3.4L or 4 popper? Auto or stick?

As far as the ARB, your plan sounds fine...

4.88s will run either 33s or 35s. With a 3.4, you should be happy with either. With a 2.7, I would lean toward 5.29s for either.

I am running 5.29s in my 3.4-powered 35-tired 87 4Runner, and do not feel the gearing is too 'short' (despite the fact I expected to be wishing for 4.88s when I did the swap...). Works well. But I am also at a mile high, which has an effect!

I do think 5.29s with 33s with a 3.4 would be a bit too short however.

OK,

With the 2.7L and a 5 speed, I'd opt for the 5.29's.

That said, they are more prone to failure than the other ratios. Some might argue otherwise, but from my personal experiance, and that of the AZ hardcore wheelers I know personally from the BTG club, it's been shown to be true over and over. Those that continue to run Toy axles have gone back to 4.1:1 R/P for there strength, but most have switched to D60's

Ratio Ring Gear - Pinion Teeth
4.56 41-9
4.88 39-8
5.29 37-7

As this shows, with each step lower, the pinion head gets smaller (less teeth). In my '87 trail rig, I've broken or otherwise destroyed 5 sets of gears since 2001 - all were 5.29's. Three of these failed because of heat from bad setups or crush rings that colasped after being hammered on the flange, but in two the pinion broke or chipped. One set failed in the front w/ a Detroit Locker, the other in the rear w/ a spool. If I had it to do again for the BPOS, I'd run 4.56's and 4:1 in the rear case of the Marlin setup to get the lower gearing.

As noted above, if the R/P aren't set up properly, they will fail - sooner than later...

Find a reputable shop that WILL stand behind there install. Toy thirds are very, very touchy on setup, and must be done correctly. It takes time and patients to get it right, even for an experianced installer.

I have not known anyone to break properly set up 5.29s. Zuk (www.gearinstalls.com) even disputes that 5.71s are weak.

Not disputing your experiences and your buddies', 87toy, but most Toys with larger tires simply cannot pull 4.10s efficiently, and to shoot down 5.29s when so many have run them reliably for years flies against larger experience. So do your research, EDS2000, then choose.

There is a pretty simple way to pull 40's w/ 4.10:1's...

This guy named Marlin's got a web site. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> A 4.7:1 x 2.28:1 dual case set with a final ratio of 170:1 or so will pull 40's just fine off road.

If you get it, seriously get it w/ 5.29's or 5.71's they will break. There is no doubt about it.

Granted, these guys are NOT ordinary wheelers, and while I don't wheel as hard as they do, my rig been treated gently.
