I could smell gas in our garage last night. I thought it was just rich exhaust gas roaming the garage. I'm constantly checking my garage/driveway. Well, I finally spotted a spot of gasoline. It's dripping from a hose (engine fuel line) directly from the gas tank. I thought it would be just a hose replacement. I took a flashlight to the top of the tank through the rear suspension. I noticed wetness around the entire neck area where the tubing comes from. I thought it was odd the gas (expensive!!!!) was dripping on the driveway with the engine off. I'm praying I'm not going to need a new gas tank. Anybody run into a similar problem? I've already had my share of frustrations with this thing. ![[Linked Image]](http://gallery.evolutionm.net/data/500/9883gas_leak-med.jpg)

With a 95? Heck I've rarely heard of the Gen I's having problems with that, much less the gen II's.

Where are you located? I had a 92 that was pretty beat up from rust and the salty winters here. I had the lines on the fuel pump unit rusted through to the point that it was leaking, and then when I got home and wiggled the line, it broke off instantly. It is a rather big buck item at the stealer. Can't remember for sure, but at least $150.
I was able to R&R it. Pulled it out, yanked the hard lines that went through the top of it, and put new ones in. The new ones were a tight fit, then Seal-all after that. Had to recoat the Seal-all a year later. Probably didn't do a good enough job cleaning it. Then when I was in there later for the fuel sending unit, I noticed it still need attention. I JB Welded it that time. Sold t shortly thereafter, so don't know how the JB faired. Fine I would guess though.
If yours is a similar problem, you will likely have a tougher time getting the tiny screws out that hold the unit in. I used small vice-grips to break them loose, then a screw driver. Be careful not to strip the head first with the driver. Get new screws use anti-sieze. Then give them all a dab of grease on top to help the slots stay good.

I'm guessing the plumbing around the fuel pump is giving away. Everything is so rusted underneath the truck, I'm guessing the fuel pump is going to need replaced (possibly gas tank)? I was considering 'JB Weld'-ing it, but I'm sure that's not a long term solution.

The pump should be fine. Looking at CAPS and at MitsubishiParts.com, I don't think the stealer will have the assembly without the pump, though I have seen the pump alone as aftermarket. MP.com wants $350 for the whole assembly.
I'm not saying JB weld the whole thing as is. I'm saying replace thos hard lines with ones that fit tight, then JB the top to "seal it up." It will work fine and cost only $10.

Whole sending unit needs replaced. I figured it would since it's basically 1 corroded lump on top of the gas tank. MP.com has it for $430 ! I had my mechanic do it since there are many rusted bolts I would not want to deal with. Basically, this is going to set me back a bit$$$.

Have you ordered it? I'd try the yards first. Parts and labor on this is going to cost you over $600 I would guess.

Yes, I have. Unfortunately, we don't own a F-150 or Silverado so salvaged parts are hard to come by. BTW, that's a pretty good guess.

I just noticed the Erie PA... Do you wheel anywhere near there? We have a cottage into NY at Findlay Lake. I have been looking for a place to go on weekends. Also, for your future bone yarding, try Car-Part.com.

I replaced the sending unit on my '92 for much less than the figure quoted to you. Are you sure you're getting a sending unit quote, and not a fuel pump assembly price? I want to say I spent under $100 for the sending unit from my local dealer, but I'd have to drag out the '04 receipts to be sure. Just talked to my buddy at the parts dept, he states the sending unit is $62.50 and the pump is $491 Part numbers-sending unit MB571603- Pump is MR208665 This was looked up for a 3.5 '95 Montero, I don't know if the LS with the 3.0 liter is different. Hope this helps you out-- PS, have you removed the access cover on the floor in the cargo area for the pump/sending unit to get a better look? It's under the carpet/floor material
