My personal opinion is to stick with the 87 grade. Unless you hear knocking or pinging from the motor, then go to a higher grade. My 05 runs great on the 87 grade.

Does your Tacoma even require premium? Which engine do you have? That's pretty odd for a naturally aspirated Toyota truck engine to require premium. (Have you also checked your owner's manual?)

Is it maybe recommended to achieve the full hp output of the engine? That's how my wife's Honda is. Rated at X+ hp if you use premium and only X hp with regular grade.

I do have the 4.0 as JasonCM stated, bard I think you are right, it is recommended, I was just wondering if there would be any damage if I don't go with Toyota's recomendation and just use the 87 grade......

Just a side note: In Utah the low grade is 85 but when I was in California and Nevada I noticed the low grade is 87. Is it like this everywhere but Utah?

Probably not, here in Indy I've seen both 85 and 87. I would guess it depends on the station... One thing I do know is my 04 Taco runs sweet on either!
