Probably the last question you wanted to hear... #644097 09/06/05 01:50 AM

Obviously I'm new here. But I'm also new to turning wrenches. I have a 5.0l out of a 1990 Lincoln Town Car and a 1990 Bronco II 4wd, currently with a 2.9l. I know what parts I need to buy. That was on a few other sites. What I'm wondering is, what parts do I need to keep from the BII under the hood? Should I keep any? Should I just empty the engine compartment?

I got as far as pulling the radiator because I know I'll need the bigger one. I know I'll need the engine management stuff from the donormobile. What I don't know is if I'll need the relays or the rest of the peripherals. Some of it seems pretty obvious, but then I'm just am inexperienced hack, I guess.

Some help, please?

FYI, I did check other places and abused the search functions. No one-anywhere-lists specifics. Getting the service manuals shortly, so some of it may become clearer when I get those. But books don't tell you everything, either.

Unfortunately we don't have a very strong Ford following here. I would like to change that but I'm only one guy...
Anyway, you will need to carefully go through the wiring. The wiper stuff, brake stuff headlamp stuff ect has to stay including the relays. The fuel pump will run a 5.0L MPI but cannot for a carb. Are you carbing the 5.0L or are you transfering the injection harness ect? I have nothing first hand for you. I've never owned a BII.

Well, make that two; It's why I chose a Ford for my first project. I've driven and done work on them before, but I've never tried anything this ambitious.

Yeah, the EFI wiring's going to make the transition, too. Well, I hope it is. I'll take your other advice to heart and pay close attention the what wires run where and try to keep the peripheral relays. Thanks alot. I really appreciate the help.

What trans are you planning to use? AOD or C4? The C4 will be alot easier in the long run. You may even be able to fid a C5 to fit so you can have a lockup convertor.
That dinky A4LD will not handle the 5.0L even if you find a way to bolt them together. I work on Ford Autos for a living and can't stand AODs.

I have no idea wha tranny is in the Lincoln the motor's coming out of. All I know is it's an electronic automatic four speed with OD lockout. I plan on checking the engine and tranny numbers when the car gets here, probably Thursday. Best way to find out for sure what I have, right?

I can speak volumns on the A4LD; I had the truck three days when the tranny went. After hunting for one and not getting lucky (everybody I called said they wished they had three or four of them), the Lincoln was given to me by a friend and the idea struck: I've always wanted to build a tough, dependable off-road vehicle, just never had the opportunity or the time. Well, the opportunity has arrived and it's time to make time.

In the next couple of days, I'll be getting another digital camera and plan on documenting this "adventure", if you're interested.

The Lincoln has an AOD. It is setup for a 2wd (Long output shaft) The output will have to be cut or swapped to the short style for use w/ a xfer case. I am doubtful that the BII tranfer case will bolt to the AOD (Not sure). You may have to get a transfer case from a 5.0L Explorer. (Shame too, if you had a 5.0L Explorer would have everything you need plus the 4R70W elect trans instead of the AOD.
(The AOD is a non electric version of the 4r70W/AODE. The AOD is not the first choise for reliability. But the 4R70w and AODE are good ones.)

I like those old A4LDs, they are super easy to build (Once you see how it works) They are also cheap to build.
Go ahead w/ the documentation, we may even be able to get an article made of it.

As I said, this tranny is electronic. Maybe it's the AODE you're talking about. Won't know for sure until I get the numbers off of it.

Advanced Adapters has an adapter with modified output shaft, t-case adapter, and hardware. This kit will allow me to keep the t-case the stock distance from either diff and I'll be able to retain the stock driveshafts. Apparently the strength of the stock shafts is sufficient to transfer power from the tranny to the diffs. I'm not sure who else makes them, but knowing they're out there is a reassurance. Wish I could have had some luck with the old tranny, though. Perhaps another project later on...by then I could have learned to rebuild the A4LD.

I did manage to find headers from Hedman for around $120, but I'm skeptical they have a bung for the O2 sensor. Worse comes to worse, I should be able to use a set of manifolds from a Mustang. After al, I'll need the oil pan from the same car.

As for the documentation, I can only promise decent pics; I am not all that great at writing. Perhaps one of the more experienced members can help with this?

Maybe, I haven't worked on anything that old in a while (at work) I thought the AODEs came in around 92'. It's nice sometimes that AA has stuff for your rig. Pricy but nice to have. Keep us posted.
BTW you can install O2 bungs in anything cheap and easy.
