On my co workers 96 LX450, 115,000 miles, the transmission, A343F(4spd auto), will shift down to "1" at all times.
The shifter will stay in "D" and it will downshift to "1".
The shifter will not move but the dash indicators will.
If he starts out in "1" he can then shift into "2" and then it will hold "2".
The LX450 was purchased 2 months ago. The transmission pan was removed, cleaned and fluid replaced a few days prior to the trouble starting.

If the transmission is bad and needs to be replaced will a A442F or even a no computer A440F work? How about a H55 5speed?

I feel a little obligated to help him, since he did give me that 5' Yakima basket off the LX to put on my FJ80 because he would not need it.

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is by your description, but have you tried adjusting the shifter linkage?

yes , it will just shift by itself down to "1".

Its a independent shop right know, they pulled the pan and found brass shavings. They are still looking into it.

Looks like its going to need a used replacement. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

The tranny was repaired by replacing the shift position indicator.
I'm not sure exactly what the part was untill I see his reciept and look at the old part.
