Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well, for a couple of years now I have dealt with a clutch that squealed when I engaged 1st and 2nd gear. I had replaced the T/O and pilot bearings since the plate and disc only had about 12K on it. The squealing went away for a while, but eventually returned. So, I resigned myself to the fact that I just might have to deal with the noise and move on with my life.

After flipping through some of the pdf files of the FSM, I decided I should check my steering wheel freeplay. For as long as I can remember, I always seemed to get some vibration in the steering (even though all of my components were fine). Sure enough, the freeplay was out of spec. I tightened it up (about 3/8 turn clockwise on the adjusting screw).

Now, much to my surprise, the clutch (or, at least, what I thought was the clutch) doesn't squeal anymore! I can't remember a time when my truck drove more smoothly and quietly! The squealing would only happen when I was disengaging the clutch (letting up off the pedal). This makes no sense to me at all. Maybe what I was hearing was not even the clutch at all - although I could swear it was. Someone please tell me I'm not headed for a straight jacket at the funny farm! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> Has anyone else had any experiences close to this?

Theres an adjusting screw on top of the steering box. Loosen the locknut, and then turn the adjusting bolt, and then tighten the locknut back up. Dont go too tight though.
