Getting the Wheeling Fever
2001 4 runner limited....the alarm started acting up and I don't know what to do. It (the alarm) goes off everytime I open the door with the REMOTE. I can open the drivers side door with the KEY and it does not go off, but, if I use the key in either the passenger side or the hatch, the alarm sounds. ????????? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Does anyone know how to dis-arm this system? Is there a fuse I can pull?

Body Damage is Cool
Factory or aftermarket? Same with spare remote and new batteries? Drivers door pin switch stuck? aftermarket alarms usually have a blade fuse under the dush near the steering wheel, good luck.

A limited version 4Runner has the factory alarm system..

The theft deterrent system function is largely performed by the "body ECU" (located at the interior fuse panel) and the "back door ECU" (in the rear tailgate) which also works the power windows and other features.. So you can't just pull a fuse, else you lose a lot of other function.

What is the history of this vehicle? Have any "add on" security features or other modifications been done?

When you unlock a door with the key, try turning the key twice to the unlock position. Does it unlock the rest of the doors? (that is supposed to happen and might be a clue)

Also when you try unlocking the doors with the remote key fob does it unlock the driver's door? When you press the key fob in twice in succession does it unlock all doors?

Do you have the second key fob? (two came with the vehicle).. Do both key fobs set off the alarm when you try to do the remote door unlock?

Are the key fobs the original that came with the vehicle? Has anyone ever "reprogrammed" the key fobs on this vehicle?

Thanks for the reply.
When I use the key to unlock, everything is fine. One turn unlocks drivers door, two turns unlocks everything else. I can NOT unlock with the key fob remote. That is when the alarm goes off. I only have one key fob.
This thing worked fine up until just before we left on vacation mid-September, then all of a sudden the alarm started going off when we unlock with the remote.(Alarm sounds and the doors lock).
No add ons or modifications since I bought the vehicle in Jan 03.
Do you know how to reprogram the key fob?

Make sure the battery in the fob is fresh. I think only the dealer can reprogram them. Ask; have your VIN handy.

I put a new battery in fob right after it started mal-functioning. I have instructions on how to re-program the fob on my TUNDRA, but can't find any for the 4-runner. Someone out there must know how to do this?
