Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
My fiancee and I were coming back from camping this morning and as we passed one of the local mud holes, i spotted something down there and we decided to stop. When we got down there we came upon an 87 ramcharger on 35s nosed off in a hole, with the rear diff hung on the bank. We hooked up a come-a-long and tried to crank him out to no avail. We then hooped in the jeep and drove back to my place and grabed my truck and the hi-lift. She and I stopped and picked up a shovel on the way back out there. When we got back I gave him a few good tugs and we were making progress, until the rear bumper finally gave up the ghost. Not all the way off, just a nice U shaped. Yay new bumper!!
Anyway we worked for an hour or so and finally got him out and back on solid ground.
I said all that not to be boastful, but to say this:
He said that they had been there for an hour or so standing by the road and only one guy had stopped to see if they needed help. We stopped and the guy in the Ramcharger and I worked together to get his rig out of the hole. I had never met this guy and could have very easily walked away, but I didn't. I rolled up my sleeves and got my hands dirty and helped this guy out.
On the way home as I was thinking about what to do about the bumper and all I happened to think, that is what this sport that we all share is all about. Making new friends and helping each other out.
So here's to all of you guys that have ever went that extra mile and to all of you that will soon get your chance.
Pay it forward guys... and girls. If you haven't been there yet, don't worry you will get your chance.
Have a good one guys, Matthew
P.S. I didn't get any pics, but there were some taken, I'll try and snag some copies and post them later.

I'm with you Brutha!!! Here is my very similar story. I live and play in SoCal. This particular day I was riding my XR650 dirtbike and on one of the short paved sections I rode that day, I saw a couple of guys with choppers on the side of the road. Seat off, scratching their heads and just looking at the bike. I stopped because I carry a good tool kit and love working on bikes. Just as I was about to get off my bike one of the 'bikers' came over and started yelling at me. I was just about to start up and leave when he got to the point. He was embarrassed that of all the 'bikers' that had gone by, (Ortega Hwy.) I was the only one to stop and offer help. A dirtbiker on a rice burner, as he put it. Anyway, I was able to get his bike started, (loose ground on the battery) and we were both on our way. Same deal as you though different circumstances. Hopefully I'll never need it but if I ever do it would be nice if it came back on me. I'm totally prepared in my truck to do whatever I can to help myself or someone else, regardless of what they drive/ride. It's really what it's all about. There's a six pack for ya if I ever meet ya....

Yeah, I have helped out a few wheelers and never asked for a dime....but, one day I ended up on the short end of the stick. I got High centered on a rock playing around in a creek bed. This burb came to the rescue and pulled my little toy out as if it was a go-cart connected to a semi. I was glad. I was looking for a few hours of work getting myself out. I offered him some cash and he just declined. We shot the $hit and wheeled some more. Great people out and about. I wont get into the snake part of this...but beware....look before you lay to hook up a tow strap. Full circle for me and beyond. Mike

Heres mine. I got my dad's 88 F250 w/stock sized mud tires stuck in this somewhat deep mud hole on the way to a swimming hole. The rear wheels were still on the hard dirt and the front was sunk to the bumper. I had some friends and a shovel so we just started digging when along comes this fella in a Hi Lux. He pulled up facing the rear of my truck and says" hook it up". I told him theres no way his Toy will get the Ford out and voiced my concern for his driveline, he just smiled and said "I guess we'll see". He took up the slack ,I nailed the throtle and eased right out of the pit. After the smoke cleared (his clutch)we shot the poop about his truck and I offered some cash and a Pepsi. He just laughed and took the drink, then he gave us a ride to the hole. After that ride I was on the hunt for a truck like that. That dude's can-do atitude and seemingly underdog truck still inspires me.
