Quick pinion preload question #652274 10/03/05 04:46 PM

Quick question. When setting the pinion preload, do you measure the torque needed to get it to start rotating, or the torque while rotating?

This is using a solid spacer with used bearings. It takes about 25 in-lb to get it to begin rotating, and about 6 in-lb to maintain rotation. Bearings are oiled.

Thanks!

6 in/lb is the correct number. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

So it is ok for it to take a lot more torque to begin rotating? It didn't feel like that when I disassembled it. I didn't take any torque readings on disassembly.

ya...that can happen. use a thick gear oil....like a teaspoon on both bearings. Helps to smooth it out.
