Read this on how to take the hub body off.

Replacement snap ring for end of axle
Snap ring pliers
PB Blaster
Hammer and brass drift to beat the cone washers loose (rest drift on hub body, and left the nuts on, so the washers don't go flyin')

Pry bar for the cussing action after you disconnect the flange at the differential.

Pull CV axle out from the inboard side.
Reverse to install.

If the boot has been torn for awhile, you're better off lugging it to the parts store for your core exchange up front. With steel prices going batschidt, they've gone up another $50 on my end of the planet.

If buying a boot kit, you'll still need to buy the end snap ring seperately.

You can also buy one of those split boot deals to slap on there after you dig out the grease and rocks from the joint and repack them with molyb grease.

As mentioned, your call; mostly depends on how long you've been driving it that way.

The first time that happened to me (passengers side) i just replaced the boot.....the next time (drivers side) i replaced the whole thing, though that was because of and exploded cv , it still took a hell of a lot less time than just the boot...guess it would depend on how much money you want to spend.

I replaced all 4 boots a year ago. A bit messy but can be done and relatively cheaply too.

Unless you're really really short on cash, it's worth it to replace the entire halfshaft unit. I changed just the boots once, and 75% of the process was the disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of the units, not to mention the approximately 80,000 shop rags which ended up being soaked in grease, and I had to wash by hand... multiple times.

The bolts are pressed in there, so you've got to pry the inner joint clear of them to drop it down.

One popular mod is to knock the bolts out, grind the splines back down a little bit, reinstall with grade 8 nuts and lockwashers.

I've done a few, so not so much cussin'

A little 2-3lb sledge hammer is all it takes to knock out the studs. If you plan to re-use the bolts just leave the nuts on the ends when knocking them out, to keep from messing up the threads.
