Need a Spot
I have a coolant smell when I start up, the temp gauge goes to 3/4 of hot before returning to mid-line, if it sets for more than two days a leak appears on the front drivers side of the engine compartment, occasionally there is a whining for a minute after startup. Could this be a water pump?
How big a job is this with a Chilton's manual/shop repair?
Any suggestion welcome.
I bought this rig new and can't part with her.

Which engine are you talking about, L4 or V6?

In spite of the engine size, the temp going up and dropping back would be an indication that the thermostat is sticking, and should be replaced.

Its a V6. Is there a seep hole that I can visualize to see if fluid is getting around the bearings?

On the V6, changing the water pump, if that is what the problem is, is not a big deal.

Basically you need to get the fan shroud out of the way, you may need to remove the power steering pump, depending on the number of angles that you elbows can achieve and the same for the A/C compressor.

Once you can get to it, unbolt the water pump. Clean the gasket surface, and reinstall the new pump.

There is a weep hole, but you may need a double jointed eyeball to see it.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 4cylinder but when mine was doing the 3/4 up on the temp guage befoe going to the half way point on the guage. It ended up being my fan clutch. I even changed the thermostate and it helped for a day but then it started again. When i changed my fan clutch it fixed it and now goes the a little more than quarter way and stays there for the whole time.
