Getting the Wheeling Fever
I hve been searching the internet and have seen some others have had the same problem but I have not found the fix. Problem on my 95 sprotage sohc. When its cold and I start it, it starts up with a rough idle and if you touch the gas, it dies. If you let if rough idle for a while(sometimes it dies a few times)until it gets a little warm then it runs fine. It ran good all summer, I had the same problem last winter and I thought it was the idle air control valve. I know thats not it now, because I removed it rigged my own fast idle with a manual choke cable. It has something to do with the colder weather. I have never changed the fuel filter, could this be it? What about a sticking EGR valve or something.

Dumb question... have you considered a block heater for the winter? Keeps it warm, inexpensive possible solution? just a thought, I'll do some searching as well and see if I can find anything.

Well, its not that cold. We are talking low 50s high 40s and its already doing it. I never had a problem with it doing this before last winter even when it got down to around 0.

maybe mass airflow sensor? It goes bad and screws with Idle air control

I'm going to check the Mass air flow sensor. I removed the idle air control valve a while back so i know it isn't giving the problem and it ran fine without it and improved my gas milage a whole lot.

Improved gas milage? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Really?! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Tell me more <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> any loss of power? difference in performance? Inquiring minds want to know, namely mine.

Yeah, its an electric valve that bypasses the throttle body. I notice that it gave the motor gas when it really didn't need to. When you let off the gas, this valve opens up and won't let the motor slow down right away and stuff like that. Mine's a 5 speed and I noticed that if I shifted to nuetral while the car is moving that the rpms did not go down to the normal 700-800 range but stayed up around 1200 until I came to a complete stop, then it dropped. I have this plugged off, so now when I let off the gas the rpms go down to the minimum idle speed. I have a manual choke cable that I use to give me a faster idle if I want it. I use this when I first start the car, then push it back in as soon as I get going and by the first light I come to it idles just fine(used to still be faster than normal until it got warm). It helps maybe 1 or 2 mpg from what I used to get depending on where I am driving. Going to work I do about 50/50 highway and city type driving and the average is about 26. Straight highway is 28-30 but I know I could do better if it had a higher differential gear. It does way too many rpms on the highway.

As for your cold start problem. I agree that the problem is the mass airflow sensor. (MAF or MAS)

yeah, Axeman, I am working nights right now and it just turned real cold. I am off tommorrow night and will pull it in my basement garage and check it out. My spare vehicle is my motorcycle and it sucks in sub 40 degree riding. I need my winter vehicle. Its a 95 and they don't check pollution on pre 96 vehicles here so I can do whatever I need to.
