Getting the Wheeling Fever
My 1992 4x4 w/ 22re, 5spd, regular cab is all stock except rims and tires and is in need of a new catalytic converter. I would eventually like to do the complete exhaust with larger pipe and all that, but right now I'm just doin the cat. Should I go with a regular one or spend the extra money for a high flow? I'm looking for a direct-fit. This is a California vehicle. Any and all suggestions, recommendations, and/ or comments would be appreciated. I am kind of in a rush to do this though. Thanks in advance.

Mudrunner
alot of the newer cats flow better than the old ones ever did. high flow isnt needed unless you have a decent amount of mods. these motors arent beasts in most cases.

Besides what info you read there, i'll add my own opinion: Get a "high flow" cat. I don't know where you got your prices but you can pick one up all day long on eBay for $50-$60 shipped. Click Here

FYI, without adding all the tech stuff....a "high flow" cat and a regular new cat are pretty much the same.

all newer cats are "high flo" it just refers to the honeycomb style cats vs the older pellet styles of the late 70's don't be fooled by market hype, the oly time is flows more is if you get it in a larger pipe size like 2 1/4 vs 2 inch ends

Body Damage is Cool
Normally, the "high flow" is marketing hype for charging more for a stock cat. But a true high flow cat would be nice.

Cats are mostly restrictive in their case design. It flares out and back quite quickly, blocking flow. A long taper flows much better. It doesn't look stock, and will probably give you problems in California with emissions inspectors when it comes to visual checks.
