Yup that's right... 15mpg, and I am HAPPY! Why, do you ask? Because I was towing a car/dolly totalling 4500 lbs, plus the 4Runner was loaded to the gills.

It held 75 fine on the flats, an pulled the grade on Monteagle mountain at 50-55. For those in the know, I went up I-75 from Ocala, FL, to I-24 in Chattanooga, TN, with a final destination in Nashville.

Thank you again, EB, for the wonderful parts used in my buildup. I could have never done this well without 'em.

That's nothing to sneeze at, esp with fuel prices in Europe. Gettin' short now eh? That came up quick!

It pulled? wow... whem my 3.0 is packed down with 5 adults and bags and food and everything... it's a DOG... when i'm alone it does just fine, but when it's packed up it gets slow.
Doesn't affect mileage much for me tho... it just doesn't get up to speed as fast...

Same here.

One time I got 23.5 MPG outta my runner...3.0, 5speed 4x4...
Had my little bro, me, no AC, back seats laid-down packed with a SBC, tires, a turbo 400 tranny, and a fuel-cell...

Amazed me.
The closest I have ever gottne to that was 20.5...just me, no AC...
Hmmm

Anyways, right on! Nice mileage for towing! You have a 22RE with EB parts I take it?

Yup... 22"REB", 5 spd. Went 75 mph, A/C running during the day (85* in GA that day), total GCVW of about 10,000-10,500 lbs.

Only 1 problem... Toasted a cheapie u-joint (vibrates out back when coasting in neutral on te highway). Oh, well... I have a spare to toss in today.

Now that I have a few minutes, I can explain what I did to make great power and mileage for the trip...

I advanced the camshaft 1 tooth on the sprocket... This pulled my powerband down lower in the RPM range (270* EB cam). The engine made little power beyond 3500 rpm, but it had massive torque from about 2400-3200. After moving the cam, I set the timing back at 5* (jumper installed), and filled up with 89 octane to stop the pinging induced by the cam advance.

When pulling, I stayed in 5th gear until the rpms fell to 2500 going uphill, then I would drop to 4th (eventually 3rd on the steepest grades). I had very slow accelleration with this much weight, and I knew it, so I didn't force it to accellerate any faster than it wanted to. Unfortunately, f there was a grade after getting on the highway, it would take up to 3-5 miles to reach cruising speed (75 mph). I was litterally pulling right with the semis... Fast down hill, slowing down going up. Several made comments on the CB about how that little 4 cyl was pulling such a great load with relative ease.

The next part was the most important... I removed the LSPV bracket, and tied the LSPV rod up as high as I could. When pulling 3,000+ pounds beind you, it is nearly impossible to have too much braking power from your rear drums. It was able to stop decently... Almost as good as stock (empty). Even if you don't advance the cam, the LSPV relocation should be done before you tow ANY large load.

Any questions?

Yes, where is the LSPV bracket and what does it do?

Too close for missiles, I'm switching to guns...

Load Sensing Proportioning Valve. Look for the little rod coming off of your rear axle housing on the driver's side, and going to the pasenger side frame rail. It attaches at the LSPV.

The valve is supposed to adjust the amount of rear braking bias according to the load applied, but it has limited travel. The other limitation is that the springs sag less per pound once the pack rests on the overload leaves. If you hit the overload leaves, you now have less rear bias in the brakes than you should.

Under normal circumstances, this is fine... But when pulling a large load, you need all the rear braking it can handle. Make sure to re-attach the rod once you are done. If not, you will hae a tendency to lock up the rear brakes, potentially swinging the rear of your truck around in an emergency stop.

Which way did you turn the cam to advance it ??

Facing the engine, turn the sprocket 1 tooth clockwise, ten reinstall. You will need to loosen all the rocker arms first, so that you can freely spin the cam a little to put the sprocket back on.

I need to get out there soon and back the cam off a tooth again... The torque is amazing, but it is hard to remember that it falls on it's face after 3800 rpm... Until you downshift to pass!
