Now that I've got the motor going I'm trying to iron out the kinks. How does the turbo light work. When the key is on the light is green but when I start the truck it doesn't come on. Is this normal...How is it suppose to work?

As I understand it, it will come on while driving when you hit full boost. Otherwise, it's off. Should only come on in the upper rev ranges.

Thats what I was figuring but I haven't really revved the motor that high yet. Still has some fine tuning. The driveshaft isn't bolted in yet either b/c I threw my back putting the tranny in. Maybe tomorrow. Can anybody with a turbo truck confirm this theory on the light? I just hope my turbo is working correctly. The engine seems to be running very smoothly so I'm assuming the turbo is functioning properly. otherwise i guess it would run like crap.

The turbo light should only come on like the other guy said, when the engine is off but the key is in on. And, like he said, the light will light up when the wastegate closes and the engine is receiving boost from the turbo. In addition, the wastegate will not close if the engine isn't under any kind of load. If you are sitting still and just rev the engine up, the wastegate should not close. Mine, doesn't even open up until I punch it in 3rd and sometimes if I punch it hard in 2nd. The last thing is that your engine can still run without the turbo being operational, but if your turbo is in fact messed up, and you are driving it, as soon as the wastegate closes your engine will run rough because the turbo is no longer boosting, its essentially slowing down the air flow even more than stock natural aspiration. Hope that helped.

Jacob thanks for the info thats what I was wondering. the turbo is probably functioning properly. I haven't really punch it too hard but I have gotten the light to come on...it doesn't stay on that long but maybe thats cause I'm not punching it hard enough. The engine doesn't run poorly when the light comes on so I would assume the turbo working properly. Once I get the motor dialed in more I'm sure I'll be able to notice more of a difference.

no problem, if you have anything besides a stock exhaust on there, especially if you have just no exhaust you should be able to hear the distinct whine that the turbo impellar makes at its high RPM. Hope everything works out.

Actually, it has nothing to do with full boost. The light comes on when you are in open loop, which is basically anytime you are seeing more than a little bit of boost. It's completely nonessential.

I finally got in the throttle a good bit one time just to see what it would do. It was pretty quick. If it wasn't for the vavles chattering I say its running pretty damn good. Anyway the light stayed on. I was figuring it was some kind of idiot light. I'm wasn't to worried about it I was just wondering how it works. But I guess its just something else to watch on the dash. The truck still has the stock exhaust on it. As soon as I get the valve noise taken care of the stock exhaust is coming off and I'm gonna run 2.5 all the way with no cat and a flowmaster. Hopefully this will be a good enough combo. I have all the tubing and the muffler laying around I'll I have to do is get it bent.
