Is it mechanical (carb) or electric (EFI) ?
I've never had any luck w/aftermarket mech pumps for a 22R. Used TOYOTA mech pumps work better than an aftermarket unit in my experience.

A buddy of mine had the same problem and he just fabbed up a cover for the mechanical pump mount and cut out a gasket and sealed it up. Then added a genaric eletric fuel pump from BAP and put it inline with the fuel line. works great, he even installed a small kill switch so he can turn off the pump when the truck is parked, making it hard to get very far if someone steals it!

If you're carbed, I just got a fuel pump from NAPA; $42. So far so good. My original finally crapped out; 376K on the dial.
4WD22R-- I know of which he speaks; it's peein' out the weep hole in the bottom; ain't the spacer. I was hopin' it was the gasket too, but wasn't that lucky.

Yeah, I don't think I'm ever that lucky either... I kinda like the idea of an eletrical pump instead of a mechanical one, throw a pressure regulator on it and your golden, works great for mine stock aisan carbs and my buddys, twin turbos, and 4 side draft 40mm motorcycle carbs.....(yeah he's a street guy )

The benefit of that is that you get to go a little more vertically. But hey, I just scored a COMPLETE (finally) '90 EFI system.
Hmmmm....mebbee the earlier stuff I've been ratholin' can go on the 83......(gleefully rubbing hands together)...

i was wondering if it was my imagination or not when my truck didnt stall out half as much when at steep slopes after the new carter electric fuel pump. but this was also the same time i had my new eb head and cam put on. so i wasnt sure what part made my truck not stall as much.

Lucky! I vetoed the EFI swap when I rebuilt the motor last time cause it was expensive/hard to find the parts.....float some of those parts this way....
