Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi All,

I'm replacing the Engine on a 2.5ltr TD Pajero.
(2 Valves dropped - made a horible mess!)

Anyhow the replacement engine is from a Manual Pajero, I currently have an auto. Whilst looking at how to get the torque converter off the flywheel on the old engine (Auto of course) I found no bolts, how does this work - Do I put a wedge between the flywheel face plate and the torque converter and gently tap it off? (I'd Rather not break it!).

Is it on a spline?

I have to fit this then on the new engine - from a Manual.

Ideas and inspiration would be nice.....

Thanks in advance.

On the engines here in the US they are held together by six torque converter bolts. They are black with a dimple in their head.

Then the flex plate is bolted to the back of the crank with two plates and a bunch of bolts.

If it's the same as the 3.0L A/T, the torque converter should be left with the transmission for engine removal. Remove the inspection plate/bellhousing cover (very bottom of bellhousing - also bolted to the rear of the engine block), rotate the engine engine manually and you'll see bolts through the drive plate (flywheel) into the torque converter. The bolts are inserted from the front side of the drive plate into the converter.

I wouldn't allow a hammer or a wedge <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />within sight of a torque converter.... you never know what they might do....

Frank's got it right.

Be carefull with that flex plate (if it has to be re-used). They are known to crack and break on the 4d56 engine.

When it is out, have it inspected (X-rayed if possible) for cracks. If you can find a new one, fit it.

PS Unless you are 100% sure of the replacement engine, replace the timing belt AND tensioner/idler, while the engine is out!

You were right on people - thanks for that.

Got it off - no cracks that I can tell - looks good.

We'll see how things go from here - after I've finished cleaning the engine bay.....
