will a factory 8 cyl cj7 tach work with a 6 cyl (also cj7)?

Not unless there is a way to change the timing circuit for the tach...

Aftermarket tachs are uually switchable between the 4, 6, and 8. They can be had from eBay for around $55 shipped if you catch the break in the bids. Good luck!
