Am looking to put Olds Aurora 4.0 V8 in my trooper. I understand that the starter on the Olds sits on top side of the engine, so the Isuzu bell housing won't work. I have the 4L30E trans but haven't looked to see if it has a removable bell housing that I can swap with the Olds. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Gary

The bell housing is removeable in that in unbolts, but the backside where it attaches to the trans is also the vlv control circuit for part of the overdrive assy where the oil pump goes thru the part you are talking about , it is not removable as a bellhousing in the true since of the word, that you could just bolt on another bell, but it should bolt to the olds eng as it uses the small bolt circle of the 60 degree eng, all isuzu v6 engs use 2 bolt circles both are the 60 degree design , the inner circle is for the automatics and the outer circle is for the manual shift , just have to watch for the dowel pin location,Jerry

I have a 91 Trooper 2.8L v6 auto, with a bad trans and a motor that's about to go out . I want to step up, could someone suggest a motor and trans to swap into.
I'm sure this has been discussed before please direct me to that link or post.
Thanks
What, Where, how did I get here again? Hey guys....how do I get it in 4 wheel drive?

The donor vehicles that are most used are the '93+ Firebirds and Camaros. These have the starter on the proper side, but a FWD out of a Lumina, or other such car can be used as well you'd just have to drill adn tap the starter holes on the right side. Others will chime in with better details or do a search under 3.4 swap.

You can't use Front Drivers if they have alum heads; the 2.8 TBI intake manifold won't bolt up. You'd have to completely rewire your EFI system to use the MPFI setup found on FWD 3400's. And you can't just bolt your cast-iron heads to these motors as they have dished pistons; the compression ratio would be extremely high.
Best bet for ease of installation is the Camaro/Firebird 3.4 or a new GM HT 3.4 crate motor.
BTW I have files for this swap, if you're interested send me a P.M. with your e-mail address...........ed
