Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ok, was on my way to do some Chrismas shopping today. Cruising down the interstate with the cruise set at 70 and all of a sudden the engine just revs up really high. I hit the brake to shut off cruise and the Trooper would just rev up while in 5th gear. I then shifted down to 4th and it seemed to do okay for a few seconds and then it to would just rev. I immediately put it back in neutral and pulled off the side of the road. Well, after that the Trooper would not move at all and the engine would only stay running if I had the clutch pushed in, even if in neutral or any gear.

I have no idea if the clutch has even been changed, does this sound like a clutch problem or something worse? I just changed the axle and diff fluids the other day and the dif/front axle fluid looked brand new. I did not change the trans fluid as of yet because I had ran out of time that day.

To me it seems like a clutch problem, but what gets me is the engine bogging down and stalling when the clutch is engaged. I plan to do some texting tomorrow and possible start pulling the trans, it was about 5 degrees here today, so I didn't do it, but tomorrow is supposed to be in the 50's. Are there any good writeups on changing a clutch? Are there any good tests to try to eliminate anything else before pulling the trans? This is on a 94 Trooper 5speed 3.2l SOHC just in case there are any differences that year.

Thanks alot guys/gals, I really appreciate all your help. I have ordered a 94 shop manual, but it won't be here for a day or two.

Thanks,

Kevin

Body Damage is Cool

Did you check the Transfer case? The shifter lever can move into a ôneutralö position. Shift it in and out of 4x4 and see what happens.

If itÆs the clutch or the Trans you will have to pull the transmission to get to either. So I would start but pulling the Trans and have a look at the clutch. ItÆs not a bad idea to get a new clutch even if thatÆs not the main problem. You will probably have to have the flywheel resurfaced too. Once itÆs out, have a close look at the transmission and the T-Case and go from there. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
